Promotional Compliance & Marketing Governance
From Zero Rankings to #1: How Strategic SEO Transformed a Global Compliance Firm's Digital Presence
A specialist B2B compliance firm had no organic visibility for any commercial keyword. Here's how we built their search authority from scratch — and made them the most visible brand in their sector.
A Market Leader Invisible in Search
Our client is the undisputed market leader in promotional compliance and independent prize draw adjudication, working with brands like Cadbury, Amazon, and PepsiCo across 90+ countries. But when we began working together, their search presence was essentially non-existent.
They had no page 1 rankings for any non-branded commercial keyword. Terms like "prize draw management," "marketing compliance services," and "promotional compliance" — the exact phrases their prospects would search — returned nothing. The site was invisible to anyone who didn't already know the brand name. There was no keyword strategy, no content calendar, no topic clustering, and no connection between blog posts and service pages.
The technical foundations were equally neglected. The sitemap pointed to HTTP, robots.txt included a crawl delay throttling Bing's indexing, multiple pages returned 404 errors, and Core Web Vitals were below Google's standards. Powerful trust signals — ISO 27001 certification, household-name clients, decades of enterprise experience — were buried or absent entirely.
Most critically, this is a niche B2B sector where total search demand is structurally small. Most target keywords have monthly volumes between 10 and 70. A traditional SEO approach wasn't going to work. They needed a strategy built from the ground up for how their market actually works.
Strategic SEO, Content, and Consulting
We built a full-scope programme that combined technical execution, content architecture, competitive intelligence, and commercial positioning.
Cleared the technical foundations
Corrected the sitemap, reconfigured robots.txt, resolved 404s with 301 redirects, fixed broken image links, and ran a Core Web Vitals audit. Established proper Search Console and GA4 baselines so every improvement could be measured against a clean starting point.
Mapped keywords to the full buying journey
Researched and mapped primary and secondary keywords across 13 priority pages — homepage, five service pages, four sector pages, and supporting pages. Identified that the client was only visible at the "compliance and risk" stage. The bigger opportunity was capturing earlier intent from marketers searching for promotion mechanics and execution support.
Overhauled on-page SEO across all key pages
Rewrote every page title, meta description, and H1. Added FAQ structures designed for featured snippet capture. Shifted the homepage H1 from the brand-led "Promote with peace of mind" to the search-aligned "Marketing Compliance Specialists" — a change that directly contributed to ranking #1 for that term.
Built a pain-point content engine
Developed a 12-month editorial calendar with 24 articles, each mapped to funnel stage, seasonal trends, and keyword clusters. Produced and optimised blog posts and case studies, including a flagship piece for a major Cadbury campaign. Every article was tied to a clear CTA and accompanied by a distribution plan.
Delivered competitor and market intelligence
Produced a comprehensive strategic report analysing buyer search behaviour, competitive positioning, and visibility gaps. The central finding: the real competitors weren't other compliance firms — they were handling houses and DIY platforms capturing demand earlier in the buying journey.
Recommended a strategic repositioning
Proposed a digital positioning shift from "compliance specialists who protect brands from risk" to "promotion performance partners who enable growth safely." Designed new information architecture, content hubs, navigation restructure, and E-E-A-T trust signal deployment to support it.
From Zero to Market Leader
A clear progression from no visibility to dominant search presence — built methodically, not overnight.
Zero commercial visibility
No non-branded keywords on page 1. No keyword strategy. No content calendar. Broken sitemap, misconfigured robots.txt, multiple 404s. Trust signals buried. The site was invisible to every prospect who didn't already know the brand name.
Foundations cleared
Technical audit complete. Sitemap corrected, robots.txt reconfigured, 404s resolved with 301 redirects. Search Console and GA4 baselines established. Keyword research and page-level mapping underway across 13 priority pages.
First rankings appearing
On-page optimisation rolled out. Titles, meta descriptions, and H1s rewritten across all key pages. Content calendar launched, first blog posts published. Keywords started entering the top 20 for the first time. "Marketing compliance specialists" broke into the top 3.
Rankings accelerating
"Prize draw management" reached page 1 from nowhere. CTR climbed from 2.4% to 3.4%. Organic traffic share grew by 6.1%. Form submissions up 25%. Competitor research revealed the upstream opportunity, reshaping the long-term strategy.
Market-leading visibility
#1 for "marketing compliance specialists." 24 keywords on page 1, 22 in the top 3. Organic key events up 229%. Click-to-call up 480%. 18.14% search visibility — the highest of any tracked competitor. From zero to market leader.
From Invisible to Dominant
When we started, the client had zero non-branded keywords on page 1. Today, they hold 24 — with 22 of those in the top 3 positions.
